The year 2022 was marked by several historical and challenging events. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict erupted, threatening international economic and geopolitical stability. Moreover, the energy crisis also occurred in Europe due to this event. Major notable events in the energy sector were also happening in Indonesia. Although Indonesia’s energy sector faced formidable challenges in 2022, there are also new opportunities for development in the energy sector. One example is the G20 summit which breathes fresh air into Indonesia’s energy transition process.
The PYC research team has chosen the nine major events in Indonesia’s energy sector in 2022. It is essential for us to feature them to reflect. We also provide our evaluation of those events and share them with the public as a part of the lesson learned. “Indonesia Energy Kaleidoscope 2022” provides valuable insights into the dynamics of some specific energy sector issues in Indonesia. The events covered include policy and regulatory updates, the energy market, energy transition efforts, and international issues affecting Indonesia’s energy sector.
The issues highlighted in 2022 show that international issues and events also affect Indonesia’s energy sector and provide a chance for Indonesia to accelerate the energy transition. Therefore, the government should take advantage of this opportunity by updating and establishing a number of regulations. At the same time, all stakeholders should work to improve the energy sector’s governance to increase further investment and utilization of the country’s energy resources. All of these efforts are aimed at assisting Indonesia in meeting its target of 23% renewable energy mix by 2025 and net-zero emissions by 2060.
