The Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) in cooperation with International Power Supply (IPS) AD and Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Sofia, Bulgaria held a “Renewable Innovation Forum: Sustainable Off-grid Electrification and Renewable Energy Opportunities in Indonesia” in Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta on Thursday, February 22, 2018. The conference aims to bring together the government, industry as well as academic sectors to solve Indonesia’s existing electrification challenges.
The forum was opened by Prof. Purnomo Yusgiantoro as the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center’s representative, H.E. Astari Rasjid as the Indonesian Ambassador for Bulgaria, and Alexander Rangelov as the CEO of IPS. After the opening speech, a keynote speech about Energy Equity was delivered by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Ignasius Jonan.
Following the speech by Mr. Ignasius Jonan was the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IPS with Unhan, ITB, and PT Len Industri. The MoU between IPS and Unhan promised joint research in the electrification of Indonesia’s off-grid area using IPS Exeron technology. IPS and ITB will work together in the technological development of Exeron, while PT Len Industri will work together with IPS with the focus on industrial application and transfer of technology.
The session afterward was the plenary session with Mr. Rida Mulyana as the Director General of New Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Mr. Agoes Triboesono as the representative of Directorate General of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The session was moderated by Mr. Herman Darnel Ibrahim as the Chairman of Indonesian National Committee CIGRE. Mr. Rida spoke about renewable energy development while Mr. Agoes covered the electricity policy in Indonesia.

In the afternoon, after the lunch break, the first-panel discussion session started with Mrs. Evita Legowo as the chair of the session. The first-panel session covered the upstream sector of renewable energy which includes the electricity generation. The panels for this session were Mr. Harris from the Directorate General of New Energy, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Gigih Prakoso as Director of Investment and Risk Management of Pertamina, Mr. Andre Susanto as the founder and senior VP of PT Inovasi Dinamika Pratama, and Mr. Damien Tournillon as the Smart Grid Engineer from Engie.
Mr. Harris presentation was about Renewable Energy Development in Underdeveloped Rural Area, Remote Area, Border Area, and Small Island, while Mr. Gigih presented the New and Renewable Energy Strategy in Pertamina. Mr. Andre focused on the Renewable Energy Technology Utilization, and Mr. Damien presented the SPORE project.
The second-panel session was chaired by Mr. Jarman Sudimo as the Director General of Electricity (2011 – 2017) with downstream renewable energy as the main topic. Mr. Tohari from PT PLN presented the Development of New and Renewable Energy in Indonesia’s Electricity Sector. Mr. Alihuddin Sitompul, as the Director of Electricity Development Program of Directorate General of Electricity, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources had a presentation about Renewable Off-grid Electrification. From IPS partners, Mr. Aria Witoelar, as the founder of PT Arya Watala Capital, gave a presentation about Rural Electrification through Village Grids / Mini-grids and Mr. Fendi Gunawan Lim from PT Selaras Daya Utama had a presentation about Off-grid Renewable Energy.
After each short panel presentation, a question and answer session was held. The audiences, as well as the panels, were given a chance to question the panels on the discussed topic. This session went very excitingly as many discussions were even continued after the session.

Before the networking session, a presentation about the Exeron system from IPS was presented. The Exeron system is unique because it could fit various needs depending on the projects. Moreover, as the Exeron system initially was built for military purposes, the system can operate in a very harsh environment. After the presentation, a networking session was held, and the guests mingled to know each other better. The networking session was accompanied by some popular Indonesian music from a traditional instrument namely Kolintang.
With the closing of a very fruitful event for those who attended, PYC would like to give thanks to all who participate in making this event successful including the IPS team, The Embassy of The Republic of Indonesia in Sofia and the volunteers. Hopefully, there will be more similar events in the coming future as to develop the energy sector in Indonesia, in particular in the renewable energy field.
