On November 16, 2018, The Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) attended the “Indonesian Energy Economics Forum 2018: The Role of Energy and Mining in Achieving Indonesia Prosperous Based on Pancasila” at The Dharmawangsa Hotel, Jakarta. The event was organized by the collaboration between the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE) and BIMASENA – The Mines and Energy Society.

The keynote speech was given by the Minister of National Development Planning, Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro who highlighted the energy economics aspects as well as the role of non-governmental actors. In his presentation, he accentuated the vital role of low-carbon energy development initiative to achieve Indonesia’s sustainable development goal. In the future, the low-carbon development initiative would directly campaign by the next Indonesia’s elected president. Next, Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro also delivered that the development of energy and mineral resources sector in Indonesia should consider some essential aspect, such as, (1) the domestic energy demand, (2) added value increases of export commodities, (3) multiplier effect in local and regional development, as well as (4) increases of employment absorption. In the national low-carbon development planning, renewable energy development should be taken into account since it will directly provide energy for communities to support the regional economic development. Additionally, the energy efficiency and conservation awareness should also be raised, especially within the industrial and commercial sector.

After the keynote speech, the event was then followed by the panel discussions. The first-panel session was moderated by Mr. Suyitno Patmosukimo from BIMASENA Energy Team. In this session, there were representatives from both 2019 presidential candidates who gave a presentation regarding their strategy on dealing with the energy and mining sector challenges to achieve “Indonesia Raya Prosperous Based on Pancasila.” In this discussion, the first candidate team of Joko Widodo and K.H. Ma’ruf Amin was represented by Arif Budimanta, while the second candidate team of Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga S. Uno was represented by Mr. Sudirman Said. In addition, Mrs. Asclepias Rachmi Indriyanto as Chair of the IIEE and Mr. Budi Gunadi Sadikin (President Director of PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum Persero (INALUM) was also presented as the speakers who represented Indonesia’s energy experts.

In the second session, there was a sharing session about the experienced and challenges in the energy sector, especially in the community development. The session was opened by Ismid Hadad, who conveyed the importance of synergism between parties in responding to the challenges in the energy sector. The second panel session was delivered by some expert speakers namely, Mr. Hakimul Batih (Executive Director of IIEE), Mr. Riki Frindos (Executive Director of KEHATI Foundation), Mr. Premana W. Premadi (Lecturer of Astronomy ITB and Head of Bosscha Observatory), Mr. Khidir M. Prawirosusanto (UGM Anthropologist), and moderated by Mr. Ahmad Yuniarto (Senior Advisor to the Indonesian Geothermal Association, Founder and Chair of the Biru Peduli Foundation). The purpose of this session was to share experiences from varies background and perspectives in developing the local community.
