Greetings from the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center!
The year 2022 was shaped by numerous historical and challenging events. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict erupted, disrupting international economic and geopolitical stability. Furthermore, an energy crisis unfolded in Europe as a consequence of this conflict. Significant developments also occurred within Indonesia’s energy sector. Despite formidable challenges faced by Indonesia’s energy sector in 2022, there emerged new opportunities for growth and progress. Notably, the G20 summit served as a fresh catalyst for advancing Indonesia’s energy transition process.
The PYC research team has identified nine major events in Indonesia’s energy sector in 2022. These events are essential to reflect on, as they provide insight into Indonesia’s energy landscape. In this report, we evaluate and share these events with the public, offering valuable lessons. “Indonesia Energy Kaleidoscope 2022” presents an overview of key issues within Indonesia’s energy sector, covering topics such as policy and regulatory updates, the energy market, energy transition efforts, and international issues impacting the sector.
The highlighted issues of 2022 demonstrate that international events significantly affect Indonesia’s energy sector while offering opportunities to accelerate its energy transition. The Indonesian government should capitalize on these opportunities by updating and establishing relevant regulations. Meanwhile, all stakeholders need to improve the governance of the energy sector to enhance investment and optimize the country’s energy resources. These collective efforts are critical for Indonesia to achieve its 23% renewable energy mix target by 2025 and the goal of net-zero emissions by 2060.
We hope you find this report helpful for your discussions and future considerations.
