Filda C. Yusgiantoro, Chairperson of the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), attended the event titled “Dissemination of Guidelines on the Economic Feasibility Study of Power Plants and Renewable Energy in Support of Energy Transition Policy Implementation in the Electricity Sector”, organized by the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LPEM FEB UI) in collaboration with PLN. The event took place on 21 January 2025 at the JS Luwansa Hotel in Jakarta.
During the discussion session, Filda emphasized that the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy requires a phased and realistic approach. She noted that, during this transitional period, natural gas and coal supported by clean coal technology could serve as effective bridging fuels. These energy sources remain relatively abundant in Indonesia and can be optimized to maintain national energy security while the country advances toward a more sustainable energy system.
However, she also pointed out that the use of these cleaner fossil fuels presents several significant challenges. These include high upfront investment costs, limited support in infrastructure, and public resistance, particularly toward coal, despite the adoption of cleaner technologies.
Filda stressed the need for careful planning in Indonesia’s energy transition strategy—one that considers technological readiness, socioeconomic conditions, and medium- to long-term energy demands.
She concluded by expressing hope that forums like this could foster stronger synergy among stakeholders in shaping adaptive and pragmatic energy policies that are aligned with sustainability goals, while also grounded in the realities of resource availability and technical constraints.
