Prof. Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Founder of the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), delivered a keynote speech at the 9th International Conference on Energy, Environment, Epidemiology, and Information System (ICENIS 2024) organized by Diponegoro University. The conference was held on 29 October, 2024, at Hotel Santika, Semarang, and brought together scholars, researchers, and professionals to discuss critical issues surrounding energy, the environment, and sustainable development.

In his presentation titled “Strengthening Energy Security for Sustainable Development in the Face of Climate Change,” Prof. Purnomo addressed the urgent global challenges posed by climate change, which are largely driven by continued reliance on fossil fuel consumption. While he acknowledged that Indonesia’s current energy security remains relatively strong, he emphasized the need for further reinforcement to ensure long-term sustainability and resilience.

Prof. Purnomo highlighted that strengthening energy security requires a holistic approach—one that considers not only the supply side of energy systems, but also demand-side management, efficiency, and sustainability. He underscored the importance of optimizing domestic resources through downstream processing (hilirisasi) as a key strategy for achieving national energy independence and enhancing Indonesia’s economic resilience in the face of global uncertainties.

His session offered valuable insights into how nations can strike a balance between energy security and environmental sustainability, especially amid escalating climate-related challenges. Prof. Purnomo’s message also served as a powerful reminder that energy and climate issues are not purely technical matters, but strategic national concerns that deeply impact the future of development and the well-being of future generations.
