Prof. Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Founder of the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) and Special Presidential Advisor on Energy Affairs, was the keynote speaker at the CNBC Indonesia Special Dialogue titled “Energy Sovereignty Strategy to Support 8% Economic Growth.” The event was held at the Four Seasons Hotel, Gatot Subroto, Jakarta, on 18 February 2025.
In his keynote address, Prof. Purnomo emphasized that energy sovereignty is a crucial pillar for Indonesia to achieve its ambitious target of 8% economic growth. He outlined several key strategies, beginning with the importance of initiating a structured and gradual energy transition, which serves as the foundation for broader energy transformation. This transition involves a systematic shift from fossil-based energy to non-fossil or renewable energy sources (EBT), which will reshape how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed across the country.
Prof. Purnomo emphasized the need for a deeper energy transformation, which requires fundamental and sustainable changes in the structure, technology, policy frameworks, and consumption patterns within the national energy system. He highlighted three core components to this transformation: Decarbonization, Decentralization, and Digitalization
In addition to these efforts, the government is also pushing for energy resilience through downstream processing (hilirisasi) of natural resources such as nickel and coal. This strategy aims to maximize domestic value creation, decrease reliance on energy imports, and enhance national competitiveness, particularly in the context of clean energy industry and technological innovation.
Prof. Purnomo closed his remarks by calling for stronger multi-stakeholder collaboration to support the development and implementation of concrete policies that will advance Indonesia’s energy sector as a vital engine for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
