This year, Indonesia holds the position to be the Chair of ASEAN. Indonesia promotes three priorities in the economic sector; Recovery and Rebuilding, Digital Economy, and Sustainability. Notably, Energy is a focal point within the Sustainability pillar. Energy transition stands out as a crucial aspect among the various dimensions of sustainability. To attain the energy transition goal, robust commitment, cooperation, and collaboration among ASEAN countries are imperative. This collaborative effort among multiple parties will lay the foundation for the establishment of an inclusive, just, and sustainable ASEAN energy framework.

Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), as a member of the Energy Transition Policy Development Forum along with Centre for Policy Development (CPD) Australia, Climateworks Centre, International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Indonesia Research Institute for Decarbonisation (IRID), and the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), collaborating with the Energy Cooperation Coordinator under ASEAN 2023 Chairmanship Secretariat organizing the official side event of ASEAN Chairmanship 2023, “PYC International Energy Conference 2023”.

For this year’s conference, PYC chose the theme of “Collaboration in Action for Inclusive Energy Roadmap” and has brought prominent and distinguished speakers ranging from the government, university, private, and non-governmental organizations. On the first day, we had an Opening and Plenary Session that provided a high-level and comprehensive discussion on the importance of supply-side and demand-side collaboration to create an inclusive energy transition roadmap in ASEAN. The session aimed to provide the current conditions, the lessons learned, and the potential collaborations between ministries and ASEAN member states. On the second day, we had the Parallel Sessions, which discussed the energy transition readiness from three perspectives: Policy, Human Capital, and Financing. We also had one room for Project Showcase for in-depth discussion about research conducted by PYC. For these parallel sessions, PYC brought in expert speakers in their field, coming from Indonesia and abroad. The speakers presented current and potential opportunities and challenges in achieving energy transition in Indonesia and ASEAN. Apart from that, PYC also held the PYC IEC Competition 2023 program and we received many exceptional works on infographics, photos, essays, and papers.
