Jakarta, 23 April 2022 – Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) held The Ensight event with the theme “Massive Disruption in the Global Energy Market: Lessons for Indonesia’s Energy Security”. The speakers of this event were the Governor of the National Defense Institute (Lemhannas) of the Republic of Indonesia, Andi Widjajanto; and the President Commissioner of PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN), Arcandra Tahar; with moderator Budi Prayogo Sunariyanto (PYC Researcher).

The event was opened by the Chairman of PYC, Filda C. Yusgiantoro. In her remarks, Filda said that recently there have been events that have a global impact, namely the Covid-19 Pandemic, the climate crisis, the Russia-Ukraine Conflict, and the energy crisis. This is a disruption that has the potential to affect the economy and energy security. Furthermore, Filda said that Indonesia actually has a large potential for New Renewable Energy (EBT), but its utilization is not optimal. This can also be a threat to Indonesia’s economy and energy security.

The first speaker, Andi Widjajanto, said that there is a close relationship that drives energy price fluctuations and instability with global disruptions such as the Gulf War, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the current Russia-Ukraine conflict. “There is no one actor in the world that can control the stability of global energy prices,” Andi said. “This is related to free market dynamics and global geopolitical dynamics,” he continued. Regarding renewable energy, Andi said that this energy transition is still a long homework for Indonesia. Therefore, mix energy is one concept that can be done, namely by using fossil energy and developing EBT. Furthermore, Andi revealed that a Renewable Energy Resilience Framework is being developed by Lemhannas to assist the government in the energy transition.

The second speaker, Arcandra Tahar, said that disruption consists of 3 periods, namely the old (a period of technology nearing the end of life), the now (a period of investing in initiatives that are successfully carried out and used in life) and the new period which is also called disruption. Arcandra said that Indonesia must have its own strategy in realizing Net Zero Emission (NZE). Indonesia must formulate a strategy by looking at lessons learned from Europe (which implemented diversification) and the United States (which implemented decarbonization). Furthermore, Arcandra said that this strategy must also take into account Indonesia’s geographical factors. At the end of his presentation, Arcandra said that the energy security strategy for Indonesia is domestic based supply (use of domestic energy supply).

The founder of PYC, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, said “The energy transition is still in the making, which is still being done from time to time,” at the closing session of The Ensight. In addition, there is no theory that can explain the economic price of energy, this includes uncertainty in VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity). Purnomo also mentioned that energy security is closely related to geopolitics and global security stability.
