Jakarta, 20 January 2026 — Center of Excellence for Climate Finance Policy Research, Education, and Training, RECLICKS by PYC, a COE under the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC), in collaboration with The Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) Project, organized a one-day short course titled “Designing and Conducting Climate Finance Policy Research for Indonesia’s Energy Transition” at the PYC Office in Jakarta. The program brought together government policy analysts, researchers, academics, NGOs, and practitioners to strengthen practical skills in climate finance policy research aligned with Indonesia’s energy transition agenda.

The short course is part of the Climate Change Knowledge Sharing (CLICKS) platform under RECLICKS by PYC, and also serves as a knowledge exchange and capacity-building gateway for prospective applicants to the RECLICKS Call for Proposals 2026. Participants explored Indonesia’s climate finance architecture, key policy instruments, and research gaps, complemented by hands-on discussions on data-driven methods, impact evaluation, and policy-relevant research design.

The one-day short course was structured to combine conceptual grounding, applied policy analysis, and practical research design tailored to Indonesia’s climate finance and energy transition context.

The program opened with an overview of climate finance policy frameworks, key instruments, and research gaps in Indonesia, led by M. Ery Wijaya, Co-Founder and CEO of Lestari Advisors. This session set the foundation for understanding how financial decision-making logic shapes climate and energy policies.

Participants then explored international perspectives and methodological approaches through sessions facilitated by experts from the University of Waterloo. Brent Doberstein, Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Management, introduced data-driven qualitative approaches and shared insights from Canada’s climate initiatives. The course concluded with an advanced methodological session led by Stefan Steiner, Professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science, focusing on quantitative tools such as regression methods for climate finance research.

“Effective climate finance policy depends on research that speaks the language of policy,” said Stefan Steiner, Professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science. “By grounding rigorous methods in real policy contexts, we help ensure research outputs are credible, usable, and timely for decision-makers navigating Indonesia’s energy transition,” he added.

From the national policy perspective, Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center emphasized the importance of building a strong research ecosystem. A PYC representative noted, “Through RECLICKS and CLICKS, we are investing in people and institutions, so climate finance research can directly inform policy choices, mobilize capital, and accelerate a just energy transition for Indonesia. From today’s short course, we hope it could equip you to produce high-quality climate finance policy research” said Inka Yusgiantoro, the Head of the Supervisory board of PYC.

The short course underscores FINCAPES’ commitment to advance gender-responsive, evidence-based climate finance and strengthen collaboration among government, academia, and civil society. By enhancing methodological skills and policy relevance, the initiative aims to improve the quality of research that supports Indonesia’s climate and energy goals.

About Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC)

The Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center is an independent policy research institution dedicated to advancing evidence-based policymaking in energy, environment, climate change, and sustainable development. Through research, capacity building, and policy dialogue, PYC supports Indonesia’s energy transition and climate agenda. In partnership with FINCAPES, PYC hosts RECLICKS (Center of Excellence for Climate Finance Policy, Research, and Training), which aims to strengthen Indonesia’s climate finance ecosystem by connecting research, policy, and practice.

About FINCAPES

The Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability (FINCAPES) Project is a 5.5-year, Canada-funded initiative supporting Indonesia’s efforts to adapt to and mitigate climate change while conserving biodiversity in a socially and economically inclusive manner. Jointly implemented by the University of Waterloo (Faculty of Mathematics and Faculty of Environment) and funded by Global Affairs Canada under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, FINCAPES focuses on three key areas: climate-exacerbated flood risk and financial impacts, Nature-based Solutions for peatland and mangrove restoration, and climate finance policy—including carbon pricing and market mechanisms—to support Indonesia’s low-carbon transition.
