Field Study on Indonesia's Energy Sector Reformation to Support Energy Transition in West Kalimantan #Day2

On Tuesday, 27 February 2024, the PYC Research Team had discussions and field visits to two Power Plants (PLTU) in West Kalimantan Province. The team was welcomed by Sony, Assistant Manager of PLTU Bengkayang, and Jayusman, Manager of PLTU Kalbar 1.

PLTU Bengkayang and PLTU Kalbar  1 were both crucial in the government’s efforts to enhance electrification in the West Kalimantan region. Specifically, PLTU Kalbar 1 was recognized as one of the largest electricity suppliers in the area, contributing approximately 56% of the total electricity supply in West Kalimantan. This emphasized the vital role of these power plants in supporting the stability and availability of electricity in the region.

Meanwhile, PLTU Bengkayang had taken a further step in sustainability initiatives. It had implemented a co-firing program involving the simultaneous combustion of coal with biomass or other alternative fuels. This initiative was part of the national strategy to diversify energy sources, reduce dependence on coal, and decrease carbon emissions. It signified significant progress in Indonesia’s energy transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The PYC team visit to these power plants provided valuable insights into how technology and innovation can improve energy efficiency and support national energy policies. This activity also gave an opportunity for the PYC team to discuss existing potentials and challenges and establish strategic collaborations in collective efforts for the future of energy.
